4.1 Earth rotation and the Balance of Angular Momentum
4.2 Gravity Field Variations and their Geophysical Interpretation
4.3 Surface Deformation by Atmospheric and Oceanic Loading

objectives

-to get insight into the dynamics of atmosphere and ocean, and to understand their interactions

-to get a feeling for atmospheric and oceanic model data (MATLAB-Exercises)

-to analyze the balance of mass and angular momentum in the Earth system and assess their importance for global Earth parameters of rotation, gravity field and the geometrical shape of the Earth

-to learn how to model and observe variations of Earth's rotation, gravity field and geometry

workload
Full time lecture. The course includes compulsary exercises with MATLAB and student presentations. In order to complete the course, students must successfully complete the exercises and pass an oral exam at the end of the semester.
literature   Lecture Notes, selected publications will be distributed in the course

Earth System Dynamics

Seminar with Guest Lecturers

(ECTS: 1.5; SWS: 1)

Dozentinnen/Dozenten

Univ.-Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Florian Seitz, Univ.-Prof. Dr.techn. Mag.rer.nat. Roland Pail
prerequisites   Introduction to Earth System Science
contents   Three invited keynote speakers from space agencies, research institutes and the space industry give introductory lectures on topics related to climate change and its observation from space. Based on these lectures and recent literature, students will prepare their own seminar presentations to realted topics, e.g., sea level rise and its observation, variations of the energy transport in atmosphere and oceans, extreme weather situations and their impact ont he environment and on humans.
